Character design

step 1: compile reference art (optional), and remember to use many layers for the different parts of the drawing. don't worry about the colurs yet!              
step 2: when you get the basic shape of your character draw over all the lines in one colur. 
step 3: take all the other layers away except the one you just drew. Now add finer detail to your character, to give him some more character.       
step 4: you can skip this step if you wont. Next clean up all the lines so they're all the same thickness.
Step 5: adding colur is next, this step can be one of the most important steps yet. Colur is mostly personal preference so play around with it. 
step 6: adding shadow gives your character depth, it can really make you character come to life and jump off the page.
